I have been MIA because while I still serviced my freelance clients, I worked on a film "The Great Mint Swindle", had a wedding to plan and then got married!!! Now I am back from the outer space and will resume regular posting after a more than lengthy absence! In the meantime here is a brilliant creation to start of this promising year... Where to start an interview......

The first song that comes into your head...now?

"Summertime - Porgy and Bess". I sing it to my daughter Eva a lot (and quite badly unfortunately) but, I love it - my dad used to sing it to me as a kid.

Tell me a bit about Standing on Tiptoe.....

It's about nostalgia, rediscovering hidden away childhood treasure, re-experiencing childhood through your children. It’s a very personal collection of work, that I am still understanding myself.

How long have you been painting?

Since I was a kid but, I suppose as a profession, for about 16 years.

What brought you to begin and continue exhibiting in Australia?

Travel and friends were the initial pull to Australia, but my love of the beaches, weather and lifestyle kept me returning. Then it was my very good friend Cat with her incredible drive, that put the wheels in motion for my first exhibition in Perth at the Gadfly Gallery.

What do you enjoy about exhibiting in Australia and how is it different to exhibiting in the UK?

For me, my solo shows in Australia provide a very focused and finite goal which make me work in an intense way. This creates a strong body of work, I get the chance to tell a story through 40 or more canvases. Being in a totally different environment, where the light, colour, texture and heat all effect how I paint. It gives me a completely fresh outlook, its very exciting and inspiring.

3 things you love about living in Brighton

My house, my friends and being able to walk everywhere!

How did you make art your livelihood?

It doesn’t happen overnight so, for me it was a case of painting because I love it and then more and more opportunities came up with buyers and exhibiting, until I thought wow, this can be my job.

Is it hard to stay motivated?

No, because even when it is hard work and you're in a rut it's like an itch you have to scratch so you just keep pushing through, and when its all working well it’s the best feeling in the world - you don’t want to stop...

What is your favourite thing about your creative process?

When it all slots into place and I start dancing round the studio.

Which other artists/creatives inspire you at the moment?

Olaf Hadjek is amazing, Tom Hammick and always Peter Doig.

3 goals for 2011?

Having a solo show with Ingo Fincke in London, and having fun and dancing more.

dream project?

Doing a range of textiles, and someone animating my paintings.

what are you looking forward to?

Summer in England, I’m hopelessly hopeful.

I love coming across an issue one on magazine buying excursions. My new issue one is TREADLIE!

I have been using my trusty old bike a lot lately... mostly to ride into town or up the coast a bit to a studio I regularly work with. My bike is not that fancy or at all 'cool'.....

Joe built himself a fixed wheel with an old Ricardo frame - it's pretty 'cool'

Anyway back to TREADLIE - the new bicycle lovers magazine (not so much for the lycra brigade)

Great article written by Tim Rogers about his bike love...

Anyhoooo issue 2 is out tomorrow and there is an article in it about my much pondered bike of choice which I am saving up for (and flying to Sydney to purchase as they are unable to ship here to the West Coast) Tokyo Bike!!!

I love this bike and I have a plan to customise that involves powder coated hardware from here!

So go get issue 2 of TREADLIE and here's a bit of Tim Rogers in the meantime x

Sometimes you need the world to turn you on your head to get feeling back into your bones...

I have always been moved by displays of human camaraderie (choir, flash mob, protest rally..) born from a passion to create anything... Being a solo freelancer in the design industry dealing with smaller clients and impossible deadlines and the 'bread and butter' nature of your work can sometimes bog you down in mediocrity and leave motivation ebbing lower and lower......
Allow yourself to be immersed wherever possible in a vision - uncompromisingly clear, beautiful and free..
There is something to be said for a seated live music event at Becks Music Box - the audience is given permission to focus completely - Wildbirds and Peace Drums (March 3 2011 - Becks Music Box)

For Christmas I got many beautiful presents among them being, a pair of Happy Socks and a copy of The Selby Is In Your Place book!

What do these two things have in common.....? Well it's Bill and Fanny!

I think I have a couple crush on these two - they seem to pop up in all areas of like for me so I thought I would mention them here :)
I first came across William Gentle and Fanny Bostrom when Todd Selby featured them in their home on his website The Selby - I fell in love! Then I realised I was already familiar with Fanny's face through fashion magazines as a model... Anyhoo that covers The Selby connection. Her now husband William Gentle (Backyard Bill) is a photographer and shot the latest and previous Happy Socks campaign! Voila! Fanny is an artist/illustrator/accessories maker extrordinaire and has her Folki accessories range in Anthropologie (one of my favourite shops that thankfully now ships to Australia)! So folks buy your Happy Socks and something Folki to feel just a little bit associated (including a few degrees of separation) with this creative NY couple! (Also check out their blogs and websites linked to their names in this post to see William's photography and Fanny's artwork) x

Well we missed out on this one living on the West coast but my sister and her boyfriend managed to get there - living in Melbourne and all - featuring a bit in this video getting a super cute free tattoo illustrated by Ghost Patrol..... I hate pain but am pretty jealous after seeing the results at Christmas time...
- look for the blonde scarved couple looking on anxiously.... before bravely diving into the paper cathedral of permanent cuteness pain!!!

Christmas Stash!
I was very lucky over Christmas....

NYE.....

Stayed close to home for this one and have to say pretty disappointed... particularly when the 'Howling Wolves' wine in a bag with lanyard was my wine option using drink tickets.... pretty lowbrow.....

Apparently the "wine in a bag" option was also seen at Southbound - example here....

New Years Day at the Bakery -YAY!!!!

This was worth waiting for and I'm pleased to say probably less intense than NYE would have been!

Favourite was definately Gaslamp Killer - as expected... great venue, great gig, great people!

I went in there recently and saw a very cool little rubics cube style puzzle cylinder thing but I can't remember what it's called :( Very pretty colours and different sizes! Fremantle Arts Centre Bazaar 2010 & George Frizzle..and HOME OPEN!

So it was very hectic for Betty and I to get George Frizzle to the Bazaar and now I am still catching up on the past three months of no sleep! The Fremantle Arts Centre staff were absolutely amazing in their attitude and support for the stall holders -thankyou! All the stall holders them selves were also very friendly and supportive of one another.

Apart from Betty and I making all our products I have to say a big thankyou to Kathleen from Strumalum Screen Printing for guiding us through the screen printing process and doing a beautiful job printing what we ran out of time to do! Anyone out there wanting to learn screen printing or needing a small printing run done for you check out Strumalum! Also a big thankyou to Tom Freeman for bringing our dream cart to life!

I met lots of new people, made some new friends and dreamed about owning some of the beautiful outfits that came floating by on shoppers passing by the George Frizzle cart. The above photos are mostly of the Friday night which had a special buzz.. if you look carefully I am theatrically describing to a lovely customer how to tie his bowtie easily!

This was made by ceramicist Fleur Schell from Soda Studios in North Fremantle - I bought some other little things too but they are presents so can't show yet! Jade from Paper Threads makes her own paper and paper products, books and beautiful textile bags with delicate embellishments. I didn't get back to her stall to buy anything but I did get her business card with her details so I will try and get some photos and maybe buy something.... for me!

I grew up on Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic recordings of Beethoven and went to the Perth Concert Hall to see WASO perform his Ninth Symphony last Thursday - those who don't know it listen to it loud, it's magnificent - for those who do I don't need to say anything except "Do you need a tissue?" I have my friends sleeping baby in the house so it's my Sennheisers are helping me with this one today....

In order of apperance: Joe's old wooden tool box has become my "craft" kit, Bow Ties ready for pressing, the leftover paper from making bunting (so pretty but I wonder what I can use it for...maybe some kind of 80's electro collage?), Les Bow Ties avec mannequin, and lastly I rushed to get a few plates painted with GOLD for Betty to take for firing in the kiln...(this particularly effortless effort will not be advancing to the firing stage! )

Well, my guests Becky Ben and Eva (le bébe) arrive tomorrow from England so I will be working deep into the night trying to relieve my schedule so I can make some time to play - Salut!

Sometimes I do wonder about my apparently very sleepy coastal hometown... however, while Joe and I rode our bikes around the edge of the port we decided to stop by the Maritime Museum and voila - Beyond Garment Exhibition! A dreamy space where beautiful objects have been displayed with the sensitivity they are not always honored with in their transition from maker to owner through a retail medium.... (I took this photo with my phone so it's not so good but the exhibition is well worth it and its FREE and on until the 28th November 2010.)

I am always smiling when i hang up my vast array of mulitcoloured underwear and Emma Bee made it possible. I recieved these gorgeous rosy pegs from the Bee herself and I love them everyday. They also look great in the pantry as closures to the half packets of spaghetti and porridge. You too can own apiece of the Emma Bee sunshine at her esty shop here. She also makes very lovely cushions perfect to lift this wintery mood x

I really admire the ability in creative people to make something ordinary, very extraordinary!

I am not saying that tapestry is in anyway ordinary but, this chair is a revelation and who knew souvenir spoons could look so glamourous? Suzie Stanford - that's who! She is an australian artist and her chair shown above was included for exhibition in the Milan Furniture Fair 2009. Australian furniture investor's take note!

Well, I am still here pressing on and making a late night vanilla cake and drinking pink moscato. This tasty, sweet, light and bubbly drink betrays my cosy living room, heater on and rain pouring outside..... It's pretty and my low alcoholic pick me up for when I need that 30 minute "holiday"...
